One of the best things about a lithium golf cart is how little it asks of you. There is no fuel, no oil and no battery watering. This guide covers how to charge at home, how often to charge, and the few habits that keep your battery healthy for years.

How to charge a lithium golf cart, step by step

  1. Park on a level surface in a dry, ventilated spot, such as a garage or carport.
  2. Turn the cart off and set the parking brake.
  3. Plug the charger cord into the cart, then into the wall outlet (or follow the order in your owner's manual).
  4. Let the charger run until it shows the charge is complete.
  5. Unplug and store the cord safely.

Many lithium carts show the battery level on the dash, so you can see when it is time to charge.

How often should you charge?

For most owners, the easy rule is to charge after each day you use the cart. Lithium batteries do not need to be run flat first, and short top-up charges during the day are fine. Starting each day with a full battery means you never have to think about range.

What kind of outlet do you need?

Many golf cart chargers plug into a standard household outlet. Some higher-output chargers need a dedicated circuit. Check the listing or the owner's manual for your cart, and ask an electrician if you are unsure about your garage wiring. Avoid long or light-duty extension cords.

Storing your cart for a long break

Going away for a few weeks or storing the cart for the season? Charge it fully first, then follow the storage steps in your owner's manual. Many lithium carts have a storage or transport mode that reduces battery drain. Check the battery every few weeks and top it up if needed.

Charging outside the U.S.

U.S. chargers are built for 110 to 120V. If you are importing a cart to a 220 to 240V country, read golf cart chargers and voltage for export.
